Wildlife Health and Conservation in Arkansas

Dr. Jenn Ballard, State Wildlife Veterinarian and Assistant Chief of Research for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission, will be our guest speaker at our meeting:

Thursday, March 10 at 10:00 am
Coronado Center Auditorium

She will go over some basic concepts of how and why they manage diseases in free-ranging wildlife and then briefly discuss some ongoing disease issues to highlight the challenges. Some topics will include

  • Chronic Wasting Disease in deer/elk

  • Sarcoptic Mange in black bears

  • Rabbit Hemorrhagic Disease Virus

  • White-nose syndrome in bats

  • Avian Influenza in waterfowl.

Dr. Jenn Ballard is the State Wildlife Veterinarian and Assistant Chief of Research for the Arkansas Game and Fish Commission.

Dr. Ballard was born and raised in Central Arkansas. She earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Fisheries and Wildlife Biology from Arkansas Tech University before going to veterinary school at the University of Missouri. After completing her DVM, Dr. Ballard went on to earn a PhD in Veterinary and Biomedical Sciences (Population Health) from the University Georgia. She served as a Veterinary Medical Officer for the US Fish and Wildlife Service's National Wildlife Refuge System before moving home to Arkansas. Dr. Ballard specializes in the identification and management of diseases in free-ranging wildlife and currently lives in rural White County with her husband and two kids.
